HMS Iron Duke was built at Cammell Laird in Portsmouth
and Launched on the 12th October 1912. after 1931 she became a Gunnery
Training Ship and Base Ship for the Home Fleet between 1939 and 1945.
She was scrapped at Faslane in Scotland 19th August 1946.
Compliment 589. Armament 6 13.5 inch Guns (3 x 2 ) and
12 6-inch Guns . Machinery 4-shaft Turbines, S.H.P 31,000 giving a top
speed of 21.25 knots this was reduced to 18 knots with mutilated boiler
power. . Displacement 21,250 tons, .

HMS WARSPITE was built at Devonport, Plymouth and
launched 26th November 1913, Took part in the battle of Jutland and
sustained 15hits and was close to foundering. at the battle of Narvik in
April 1940 HMS Warspite to part in the Battle of cape Matapan and in May
1941 took part in the battle of Crete, where is sustained damage by a
heavy bomb hit. on the 16th September during the Landings at Salerno,
she was hit by a German Glider bomb, she was towed to Gibraltar for
temporary repairs and fully repaired at Rosyth in March 1944. In June
1944 she was deployed at Normandy with only three functioning main
Turrets, she also took part in the bombardment of Brest, Le Havre and
Walcheren. She was sold for Scrap in early 1947, and during the voyage
to the Breakers she ran aground at Mounts Bay, and was broken up in situ
over the following five years.

HMS Vanguard was the last of the great Royal navy
battleships, built at Clydebank, she was launched on the 30th November
1944, and did not see service during world War Two, She was the biggest
British battleship with a displacement of 42.500 tons. she carried 8
15-inch guns and a secondary armament of 16 x 5.25 inch guns and 71 AA
Guns, her compliment was 1600. She finally was scrapped just 15 miles
from where she was built at Faslane, 9th August 1960.

| Battle of Dogger Bank, 24th January 1915.
A
German force of 4 Battle Cruisers , 4 light cruisers and 22 destroyers
left their German port to attack targets on the English Coastline. on
the same day a Royal navy fleet of 6 battle cruisers, 8 light cruisers
and 28 destroyers had left Scapa Flow to patrol the North Sea.
The naval battle which ensued lasted three hours with the German
losing The battle Cruiser Blucher which was sunk by Gun fire and torpedo
hits. The British flag ship HMS Lion was hit in the engine room
and was halted. Many of the ships that took part received damage. but
the casualties to the Germans were 1,000 killed and 300 wounded compared
to the British losses of 6 killed and 22 wounded. |
